Shared note | Immigrated before 1860 When Peter and Ellen Heaney Darby arrived in Greenport in 1860 with three sons, Henry, Peter and James, he opened a candy store on the corner of front and first streets. They lived on the corner of front and fifth streets. They had one more son, Christopher. By the time the 1870 census was taken, the father, Peter, and one son, James, had passed away. Ellen was listed as head of household and a laundress, but an 1873 atlas shows her still having the store. Another family myth was that they had a daughter, Julia, who married a Preston. Julia Preston was the daughter of S.T. Preston, founder of the ship chancellory and hardware store at the foot of main street. It isn't clear how Julia met Peter Darby, but she did and fell in love with him. Preston liked Peter lo what he didn't like was that Peter was a catholic. He forbid Juliet to see him and even sent her way for a while, but she defied him. She not only married Peter but converted to Catholicism. ST Preston was furious; a forbidding any of his family to go to her wedding or have anything to do with her. He do so and Karin forbid anyone to mention her in his presence. Harry despite to the grave. When he bought a family plot in the sterling cemetery, there was room for all of his children except her. Peter and Julia moved to brooklyn where he was in the marine business. Julia had two sisters and they use to visit her in brooklyn without their fathers knowledge. Peter died in the 1920s. There was room for him in the Darby Claudio plot, so Julia had him buried with his family. Julius sister, Mrs. Ben Rogers had no intention of being buried in the family plot; she planned to be interred with her husband. When Julia died in 1946, her sister gave her a plot and she is buried with sharp rest and family despite ST's hatred. A few years after Peter Darby Sr. died, Ellen married Emmanuelle Claudio. He owned a small bar, restaurant and hotel. She had at least two sons with him. He was originally from the Portuguese Azore islands. He brought in a nephew of his from there to Greenport; his name was Frank Claudio. Frank decided to open a bar and restaurant which, incidentally, is still in the family's hands. He was a citizen and so he couldn't get a liquor license. Emmanuelle couldn't help him as he already had a license. Claudia's restaurant opened with a license in the name of Ellen Heaney Claudio. When frank became a citizen he put the new license in his own name. |
